The FAMOUS…. *ADRENAL COCKTAIL!*

Over the last the few weeks, we have been talking about some of the best ways to support your metabolism with nutrition and lifestyle. One of those BIG components is to REPLENISH MINERALS. Adrenal cocktails are a GREAT way to begin doing this in addition to a nutrient dense food.

Why?

Minerals are burned through when we are stressed! It takes a lot of energy and nutrients to handle our stress so our body begins using up our nutrients particularly minerals.

Adrenal cocktails are a mineral rich elixir that can be consumed 1-2 times a day between meals to support our mineral status.

KEY COMPONENTS for an Adrenal Cocktail:

#1 | WHOLE FOOD VITAMIN C (AKA FRUIT JUICE)

You can totally mix and match recipes for adrenal cocktails! You can use orange juice, grapefruit, lime, even cherry juice! Dealer's choice! BUT you need to make sure your juice is organic, not from concentrate and does not contain ASCORBIC ACID! (We will learn about this more below) Whole food vitamin C gives us tons of nutrients including copper!

#2 | SODIUM

Sodium is a vital mineral needed for many functions within the body. We need sodium to be in ratio with other minerals including calcium, magnesium and especially potassium.

For this one, I recommend a clean sea salt. Redmond's sea salt is one of my favorites. You want to avoid iodized table salt though.

#3 | POTASSIUM

Potassium is super important for electrolyte balance as well as supporting getting thyroid hormone AND glucose into our cells.

You have a few options for potassium sources to choose from:

  • cream of tartar

  • aloe vera juice

  • coconut water

*add a fun glass to spruce up the experience!

#4 | [OPTIONAL] PROTEIN + FAT

Some fun ingredients you can add in to make a more balanced option are adding in protein, fat or both!

Unflavored collagen is a great thing to add to make sure your macros are staying balanced and you aren't going to get a big blood sugar spike!

Coconut milk or coconut cream is a great way to add in some fat to balance macros as well!

#5 | [OPTIONAL] MAGNESIUM BICARBONATE

Lastly, magnesium bicarbonate is one of my fav things to add into the adrenal cocktail to support magnesium also!

I'll link it below for purchase if interested! Magnesium bicarbonate is the most bioavailable form of magnesium and it only comes in liquid form.

Now let's talk Whole food vitamin C versus ascorbic acid! I know you're probably thinking but ascorbic acid IS vitamin C and the truth is this is what we've been told and what is marketed.

BUT ascorbic acid is not truly vitamin C, it's a part of vitamin C. Whole food vitamin C contains tyrosinase (a needed enzyme for the body to use copperr) and copper.

Ascorbic acid does NOT contain these! Because of this, ascorbic acid actually depletes our body of ceruloplasmin which is bioavailable copper.

Remember copper is SUPER important for making thyroid hormone as well as needed in our iron recycling system.

Morley Robbins (creator of the root cause protocol) uses the analogy that if whole food vitamin C is a car then ascorbic acid is the shell of a car. It has some similarities but overall is missing a TON of components.

We want to be avoiding ascorbic acid. Unfortunately, you really need to look at labels to find juice that doesn't contain it!

IT'S 5 OCLOCK SOMEWHERE! ;)

Meghan
